Why hasn't Japan's Emperor said anything about the earthquake and tsunami?

I am curious why Japan's royal family hasn't made any comment about the devastation that their country is undergoing? It would seem that given the Emperor's importance in Japan that he would have been seen making consoling comments to help his people through this period. Has he or the empress made such comments but they are just lost in the confusion? Just seems odd. Any thoughts?
