What kind of film should I use for the Canon AE-1?

I luckily found this camera at the thrift store for just $10 today! I went home and tried it out with my dad's film and it was his last one. I don't know if it actually works yet because I haven't developed them. I'd like to start off with some cheap black and white film because I don't want to spend a lot of money on film if I'm not even sure if I'd enjoy using this thing. I just want to experiment with it. Yes I am aware that the cheap film will affect the quality of the pictures.
